How to wash your hair in summer: tips to keep it radiant

Sun, beach, and pool are unmistakable synonyms for summer. With them come the great challenges of the warmer months: keeping our hair healthy and shiny despite these conditions.

Heat, sun exposure, and chlorine weaken our hair, leaving them dull, dry, brittle, and lifeless. For this reason, knowing how to properly wash your hair in summer is key to protecting it and flaunting flawless hair throughout the season. We’ll show you the perfect routine to achieve it!

Why summer affects your hair

On a daily basis, hair is exposed to external aggressions, particularly in summer due to factors like UV rays, saltwater, pool chlorine, and humidity. These elements can dehydrate hair, alter its colour, and weaken its structure. For instance, chlorine can strip the scalp’s natural oils, while the sun can damage the cuticle, making hair dull and fragile. Therefore, proper washing is essential to maintain its vitality.

Key steps for washing your hair in summer

1. Rinse your hair before and after swimming in the pool or sea

“A fundamental step in summer is to rinse your hair with clean water before entering the pool or sea. This reduces the absorption of chlorine or salt, as wet hair absorbs fewer external substances. After swimming, rinse immediately with fresh water to remove residues that could accumulate and damage the hair fibre. Use a bottle of water if you don’t have immediate access to a shower”, explains Carlos Queirós, director of Loretto Cabeleireiros in Gondomar, Portugal.

2. Use a gentle, specific shampoo

Choosing a restructuring shampoo for sun-exposed hair is crucial for an optimal wash. Montse Rodríguez, director of Matiz Perruquers salon in Terrassa, Barcelona, recommends: “For these months, I suggest Hop Sun Care Restorative Shampoo because it not only deeply cleanses the hair and removes salt, chlorine, and sand residues but also restores and hydrates, leaving hair soft and nourished from the first use. Another advantage is that it protects colour and prevents greenish tinges.”

3. Wash with lukewarm or cold water

Hot water can worsen hair dryness, especially in summer. “To wash your hair in summer, use lukewarm or cold water to seal the cuticle and maintain natural shine. Cold water also stimulates scalp circulation, promoting stronger hair,” explains Gema Casas, director of Gema Casas Peluquería Orgánica salon in Madrid.

4. Avoid over-washing

Washing your hair every day can strip the natural oils that protect it. “In summer, try to space out washes based on your hair type: every two or three days for dry hair, or every other day for oily hair. This habit will prevent dehydration,” says Christian Vendrell, director of Identity Peluqueros, in Valencia.

This summer, adapt your washing routine to the needs of the new season and show off spectacular hair for any summer plan!
