It\u2019s one of the most in-demand techniques at hairdressing salons because it\u00a0brightens<\/strong>\u00a0both the\u00a0hair<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0face<\/strong>. We\u2019re talking about\u00a0balayage<\/strong>, the timeless trend that\u2019s here to stay. Mia Casal<\/strong>, from the\u00a0Marketing Global<\/strong>\u00a0team\u00a0Montibello\u00a0Hair<\/strong> will tell you all about it!<\/p>\n

What is balayage and when was it popularised?<\/h2>\n

Balayage<\/strong>\u00a0dates back to the\u00a01970s<\/strong>\u00a0when it was created by hairdresser\u00a0Jacques Dessange<\/strong>. Its name comes from the French verb balayer<\/strong>, which means \u201cto sweep\u201d, referring to the technique of \u201csweeping\u201d colour from roots to ends.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a freehand lightening technique that creates a\u00a0colour gradient<\/strong>\u00a0in hair, keeping the natural hair colour at the roots, achieving natural-looking results and depth, and\u00a0subtly lightening mid-lengths and ends<\/strong>, thus endowing hair with fabulous\u00a0radiance<\/strong>. All this is done while always maintaining colour harmony with the natural hair colour and perfectly blending the different hues.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s highly sought-after as it just looks so effortlessly natural. What\u2019s more, it requires\u00a0very little maintenance<\/strong>: it\u2019s enough to get a\u00a0colour retouch at the salon every three to six months<\/strong>, depending on how much lighter your hair is and the level of contrast with your natural hair colour.<\/p>\n

This technique has branched out even further, so, now there are several techniques such as\u00a0ombre<\/strong>, which is differentiated by being subtler, for darker hair; melting<\/strong>, which involves perfectly blending into the natural hair colour; and\u00a0foilayage<\/strong>, a form of\u00a0balayage<\/strong>\u00a0wherein hair is wrapped in foil during the lightening process to achieve more levels of lift and create greater contrast.<\/p>\n

BALAYAGE: BEYOND BLONDE HUES<\/h2>\n

Although it started out as a gradient for blonde or light hair, over the past few years, it\u2019s been used for all kinds of base colours, such as both medium brown and brunette, with more\u00a0toffee<\/strong>,\u00a0hazelnut<\/strong>\u00a0and even\u00a0cinnamon<\/strong> hues. All this is done while always looking as natural as possible \u2013 one of the key principles behind this technique.<\/p>\n

Anna Barroca<\/strong>, manager of the\u00a0Barroca Perruquers<\/strong><\/a> salon in\u00a0Andorra<\/strong>\u00a0remarks, \u201cPeople come in to our salon asking for more natural-looking results, specifically vanilla blonde or golden blonde. This is why, we sometimes use several techniques such as balayage, babylights, highlights and contouring to recreate some lovely shading in a single session. Double-process colour can also be used to add depth to hazelnut hues<\/strong><\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0Jose Su\u00e1rez<\/strong>,\u00a0manager of\u00a0<\/strong>Florent Su\u00e1rez Peluqueros<\/a> in A Coru\u00f1a explains, \u201cFor fair skin, balayage in cool tones is more flattering while we go for warmer tones for darker skin<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

As for hair length,\u00a0Su\u00e1rez<\/strong>\u00a0confirms that \u201cin order to do balayage, hair has to be at least chin-length<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u00e9clat<\/strong><\/a>, the\u00a0acidic demi-permanent hair dye<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0Montibello<\/strong>, with\u00a0proteins<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0vitamin C<\/strong>, is the perfect ally for colourists when performing these techniques.
